Twins with Different Fathers in New Zealand: Heteropaternal Superfecundation Explained

In New Zealand, around 1 in every 80 births is a twin birth. Most twins are classified as either identical or non-identical (fraternal), depending on their genetic origins. Identical twins result from a single fertilised egg that splits into two embryos, while fraternal twins occur when two separate eggs are fertilised. Our twin zygosity testing can determine whether twins are identical or fraternal.

But there’s a fascinating and very rare twist to the story of fraternal twins: they can actually have different biological fathers. This phenomenon is called heteropaternal superfecundation. Yes – twins with two dads.

How Can Twins Have Different Fathers?

A woman’s menstrual cycle usually lasts about 28 days, with ovulation occurring roughly halfway through. During ovulation, one or more eggs are released and can be fertilised.

Heteropaternal superfecundation happens when:

  1. Two eggs are released in the same cycle.

  2. The woman has sexual encounters with different partners within a short time frame.

  3. Each egg is fertilised by sperm from a different man.

The window for this to occur is narrow, usually within a few hours to a maximum of 4–5 days after the first encounter.

How Rare Are Twins with Different Fathers?

This is an extremely rare event. One US study in 1992 found that heteropaternal superfecundation occurred in just over 2% of paternity tests involving twins. However, it’s likely underreported – in most families, there’s no reason to suspect or test for it.

Some researchers suggest cases could become slightly more common in the future due to factors like:

  • fertility treatments that increase the number of eggs released, and

  • social changes leading to more overlapping relationships.

Can Triplets Have Three Different Fathers?

Yes – while even rarer, it is biologically possible. If a woman releases three eggs during ovulation and each is fertilised by sperm from different partners, triplets with three biological fathers could result.

An Extraordinary Phenomenon

Although it may sound like something out of a novel, heteropaternal superfecundation is a documented scientific reality. The odds are minuscule, but when it does occur, it creates a truly extraordinary set of circumstances – and DNA testing is the only way to confirm it.
