Twins can be either identical (monozygotic) or non-identical (dizygotic/fraternal). Knowing whether twins are identical or not can be important for medical, social, and personal reasons – and a DNA test is the most reliable way to find out.
Identical Twins (Monozygotic)
Identical twins develop when a single fertilised egg splits into two embryos. They share essentially 100% of their DNA. Although their genetic profiles are the same, they may still have small physical differences, such as birthmarks, hair patterns, or teeth development.
Non-Identical Twins (Dizygotic/Fraternal)
Non-identical twins occur when two separate eggs are fertilised by two sperm at the same time. These twins share about 50% of their DNA – just like any other sibling pair.
Why DNA Testing Is Best

Scans during pregnancy are not always reliable. Around one-third of identical twins have separate placentas, and sometimes non-identical twins’ placentas can fuse, creating the appearance of a single placenta.

Appearance alone can be misleading as identical twins may look different, while non-identical twins can look very similar.

You can order a zygosity DNA test kit online or by contacting us directly by phone, email, or through our contact form. Orders placed before 2pm NZ time on a weekday are dispatched the same day, while those placed after 2pm, or on weekends and public holidays, are sent the next business day.
2. Collect The Samples
Each kit comes with step-by-step instructions. Collecting the DNA is simple and painless – just a quick cheek swab from both twins (or triplets if required). Return your samples to our laboratory using a tracked shipping method of your choice.
3. Receive Your Results
As soon as the samples reach our lab, our scientists begin the DNA analysis. Your twin zygosity results will be sent securely by email within 5 business days, provided the samples are of good quality and no additional testing is needed.
