A DNA kinship test looks at how much DNA two or more people share, and whether that pattern of DNA is consistent with a biological relationship. This type of testing can help answer questions about family connections when a parent is not available for testing.

We can also perform Y-STR testing, which compares DNA passed down the paternal line. This is most often used when two males want to know if they share the same biological father, but he is not available for testing. Other paternal-line relationships (such as grandfather–grandson) can also be tested.
What the Results Mean
Unlike paternity or maternity testing, kinship testing does not always give a clear “yes” or “no.” Instead, your results will show one of three possible outcomes:

Support for the tested relationship – it is likely that the people tested are related.

Inconclusive – there is not enough evidence to confirm or rule out the relationship.

No support for the tested relationship – it is unlikely that the people tested are related.

Pricing
The cost of a kinship DNA test is $699 for two people, with an additional $249 for each extra person tested. If a known parent (such as a mother) is available and included in the test, their sample is tested at no extra cost.

1. Arrange Your Test
Because every family situation is different, kinship tests need to be tailored. Contact us by phone, email, or through our contact form and we’ll recommend the best testing option for your circumstances. If your order is received before 2pm NZ time on a weekday, your kit will be dispatched the same day. Orders received after 2pm, or on weekends and public holidays, are sent the next business day in discreet packaging.
2. Collect the DNA Samples
Your kit includes everything you need to collect cheek swabs at home, with simple instructions to follow. Once complete, return your samples to our laboratory using a tracked shipping method of your choice.
3. Get Your Results
When all samples arrive, our scientists begin analysis immediately. You’ll receive your results securely by email within 5 business days, provided the samples are good quality and no further testing is required.
