How Maternity DNA Testing Works
Just like a paternity test, a maternity test works by comparing the child’s DNA profile with that of the potential mother. Because children inherit 50% of their DNA from each parent, our scientists can determine whether the child has inherited their DNA from the mother being tested.
At Identilab, we analyse 23 DNA markers (plus 4 biological sex markers) to provide clear and reliable results. Testing is performed in our purpose-built Australian laboratory by scientists with more than 45 years of combined experience in DNA and human identification sciences.

You don’t need a doctor’s referral to order a maternity DNA test. Each at-home maternity test kit includes testing for one child and the alleged mother, with the option to add extra children for $199 each.

1. Order Your At-Home Maternity Test Kit
You can order directly online or get in touch with us by phone, email, or through our contact form. Orders placed before 2pm NZ time on a weekday are dispatched the same day. Orders placed after 2pm, or on weekends and public holidays, are sent the next business day. Your kit will arrive in discreet packaging.
2. Collect the DNA Samples
Each kit comes with simple step-by-step instructions. Collecting the samples is painless – just a cheek swab from inside the mouth of both the child and the mother being tested. Send your samples back to our laboratory using a tracked shipping method of your choice.
3. Get Your Results
Once all samples arrive at the lab, our scientists begin analysis straight away. Your maternity DNA test results will be emailed to you within 5 business days, provided the samples are good quality and no extra testing is required.
