Does DNA testing require blood? No! Many people are surprised (and relieved!) to learn that we don’t need blood samples for our at-home paternity, maternity, kinship, or twin zygosity DNA tests. Instead, we use simple, painless mouth swabs – and they work just as well as blood for DNA testing. Here’s everything you need to know about why we use cheek swabs instead of blood samples.

Why Cheek Swabs Are Better Than Blood for DNA Testing

The Science: DNA is identical in every cell of your body – whether it’s a blood cell, skin cell, or cheek cell. This means we can extract the exact same genetic information from a simple cheek swab as we could from a blood sample.

Mouth swabs (also called buccal swabs) are:

How Cheek Swab DNA Collection Works

The Simple 4-Step Process:

Step 1: Prepare

• Avoid eating, drinking, or smoking for 30 minutes before
• Rinse mouth with water if mouth is dry
• Wash hands before handling swabs
• Read the simple instructions

Step 2: Swab Collection

• Remove swab from sterile packaging
• Rub the soft foam tip firmly inside one cheek
• Use circular motion along gumline
• Rub for at least 30 seconds
• Repeat on inside of other cheek

Step 3: Apply to Collection Card

• Press swab onto designated area of collection card
• Watch card change from pink to white (DNA transferred!)
• Allow card to air dry for 10-15 minutes

Step 4: Package and Return

• Place dried cards in return envelope
• Send samples back to Identilab using a trackable method
• Track return to laboratory

Total Time: About 5 minutes per person
