How Long Does a Paternity Test Take in New Zealand?
For our at-home paternity DNA test kits, results are available within 5 business days of receiving your samples at our laboratory*. If you need answers sooner, we also offer an Express Testing option with results in just 2 business days*.
*Providing the samples are of good quality and no additional testing is required.
Many people expect DNA test results to be instant, probably because of how quickly it happens on TV. In reality, there are several steps involved before you get your results. Here’s what the process looks like from start to finish.
Paternity Test Timeline in New Zealand
Step 1: Kit Delivery (1-2 Business Days)
Once we receive your order online, by phone, or email, we prepare your DNA collection kit and send it to you in discreet packaging. Delivery is available anywhere in New Zealand.
Your kit includes everything you need to collect your samples at home: swabs, collection cards, and step-by-step instructions.
Step 2: Sample Collection at Home (Same Day)
As soon as your kit arrives, you can collect your samples. It’s quick and painless – just swabbing the inside of the mouth. Once you’ve finished, you can send them back the same day.
We’ll email you once we’ve received the samples at the lab so you know testing is underway.
Step 3: Laboratory Analysis (5 Business Days)
Once all samples for your case arrive, our scientists begin testing. The process involves several steps:

DNA amplification – copying the DNA to ensure there’s enough material to analyse.

DNA profiling – running the DNA on specialised equipment to generate profiles.

Analysis – comparing the child’s DNA profile to the alleged father (and mother if included) to see whether the DNA supports a biological relationship.

Quality review – every profile is carefully checked. If a sample is degraded or unclear, we may need to reprocess it, which can add time.
Step 4: Results Delivered by Email (Same Day)
Before your report is issued, another scientist independently reviews your case to make sure everything has been processed correctly. Once complete, your results are emailed to you straight away.

From start to finish, most clients receive their results within about two weeks of ordering their kit (allowing for postage to you, return courier, and the 5-day analysis).
