NZ Privacy Act 2020 Compliance for DNA Testing
When handling the personal or genetic information of individuals in New Zealand, we operate under the Privacy Act 2020 and the Health Information Privacy Code 2020. These laws impose strict rules on how data must be collected, used, disclosed, stored, and destroyed.
Any policy or process here is designed so that NZ clients receive at least the standard of protection required by NZ law, even though our laboratory is located in Australia.
What DNA Data We Collect from Your Samples
For our at-home parentage, kinship, and twin zygosity tests, the genetic samples taken are cheek swab samples, which we convert into DNA profiles. We do not analyse or store your entire genome or sensitive disease-associated genes. The data we retain is limited to the markers needed to compare relationships (i.e. for parentage or kinship analysis).
How Identilab Uses Your Genetic Information
We use your personal and genetic information solely for the purpose of performing your DNA test, interpreting results, and communicating those results to you. We may also use anonymised, de-identified data for internal quality control, research, or validation, but never in a way that identifies you or your family.
We do not use your genetic data for marketing, profiling, or any secondary purpose without your explicit consent.
