Reality: Identical twins share 100% DNA but can develop different physical characteristics due to environmental factors, epigenetics, birthmarks, and developmental variations.
❌ “My doctor/ultrasound said they’re identical”
Reality: Pregnancy scans examine placentas and amniotic sacs, not DNA. About 70% of same-sex twins can’t be definitively classified at birth because:
- 1/3 of identical twins have separate placentas
- Fraternal twins can implant close together and appear to share a placenta

⚠️ It’s important to note this does not mean the twins are “99.99999995% identical.” It means the probability they are identical rather than fraternal is that high.
